چکیده
The strongly enhanced and localized optical fields that occur within the gaps between metallic nanostructures can be leveraged for a wide range of functionality in nanophotonic and optical metamaterial applications. Here, we introduce a means of precise control over these nanoscale gaps through the application of a molecular spacer layer that is self-assembled onto a gold film, upon which gold nanoparticles (NPs) are deposited electrostatically. Simulations using a three-dimensional finite element model and measurements from single NPs confirm that the gaps formed by this process, between the NP and the gold film, are highly reproducible transducers of surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering. With a spacer layer of roughly 1.6 nm, all NPs exhibit a strong Raman signal that decays rapidly as the spacer layer is increased.

An optimal substrate design for SERS: dual-scale diamond-shaped gold nano-structures fabricated via interference lithography.
Dual-scale diamond-shaped gold nanostructures (d-DGNs) with larger scale diamond-shaped gold nanoposts (DGNs) coupled to smaller scale gold nanoparticles have been fabricated via interference lithography as a highly reliable and efficient substrate for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The inter- and intra-particle plasmonic fields of d-DGNs are varied by changing the periodicity of the...
متن کاملRaman enhancement on a broadband meta-surface.
Plasmonic metamaterials allow confinement of light to deep subwavelength dimensions, while allowing for the tailoring of dispersion and electromagnetic mode density to enhance specific photonic properties. Optical resonances of plasmonic molecules have been extensively investigated; however, benefits of strong coupling of dimers have been overlooked. Here, we construct a plasmonic meta-surface ...
متن کاملHighly reproducible and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering from colloidal plasmonic nanoparticle via stabilization of hot spots in graphene oxide liquid crystal.
Although it is now well recognized that plasmonic gold/silver nanoparticle based aggregates having electromagnetic hot spots are responsible for high sensitivity in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), the high yield and reproducible production of such nanostructures are challenging and limit their practical application. Here we show a graphene oxide (GO) based approach in generating sta...
متن کاملQuantitatively analyzing the mechanism of giant circular dichroism in extrinsic plasmonic chiral nanostructures by tracking the interplay of electric and magnetic dipoles.
Plasmonic chirality has drawn much attention because of tunable circular dichroism (CD) and the enhancement for chiral molecule signals. Although various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the plasmonic CD, a quantitative explanation like the ab initio mechanism for chiral molecules, is still unavailable. In this study, a mechanism similar to the mechanisms associated with chiral molecule...
متن کاملControl of radiative processes using tunable plasmonic nanopatch antennas.
The radiative processes associated with fluorophores and other radiating systems can be profoundly modified by their interaction with nanoplasmonic structures. Extreme electromagnetic environments can be created in plasmonic nanostructures or nanocavities, such as within the nanoscale gap region between two plasmonic nanoparticles, where the illuminating optical fields and the density of radiat...
